so as part of the discussion group the other night we went through mainstream gay publications to try and deconstruct gay capitalism, etc
and this one magazine really confused me because it had all the same advertising— HIV medication, alcohol, underwear (all full of thin able-bodied probably cis white men too of course)— but its content had this weird presentation of subversion
like i don’t remember what the article was about but there were a few pages dedicated to an older kinda chubby lesbian of color and that visibility stuck out to me as kind of cool
and there was a section on ~pride~ that had a giant picture of who i think was mykki blanco but couldn’t find a credit, and a mention of stonewall and of course ‘stonewall was a riot’
and the juxtaposition of these things in the midst of all this advertising for homonormativity, that by definition excludes so many people from these groups just stuck out as like what the fuck to me
and i’ve been thinking about this and trying to decide if maybe this was intentional, maybe the magazine is using its advertising backing to deliver actual subversive content
but there was like a fucking several page spread of fucking cheyenne jackson being all white and muscular and half naked and boring and shit
and i think what i just realized is this magazine is actually using subversive queerness to deliver homonormativity
like, selling the idea that your existence and assimilation is revolutionary through absolut vodka, bud lite and aussie bum ads
like that is gonna fuck up anyone’s world, as if jerry falwell and chick-fil-a are our only enemies these days
and “boycotting” them, kissing your not heterosexual lover in front of them is going to be actually scandalize anyone, gonna do actual change
as if the enemies aren’t also the queers who wanna leave the most vulnerable behind to join the comfortable status quo
fuckin
i just don’t think existence is enough anymore.
we need action.
