can people stop acting like heterophobia is actually a thing and also that it is on par with homophobia and heterosexism

like look y’all i know we live in a world that discourages critical thought and wants us all to believe x always equals y but it simply isn’t true

heterophobia and things like “die cis scum” are expressions of rage from a lifetime of experiencing things like homophobia, heterosexism, transphobia, cissexism etc

they are REACTIONS to institutional and systemic oppressions based on bigotry, hierarchies and valuing certain bodies over others

homophobia comes from hate and bigotry. heterophobia comes from resistance.

it completely 100% makes sense for the oppressed to be distrustful of the oppressors. it’s fucking survival.

like if you wanna solve the problems of the world through holding hands and puppies and “hate is hate” bullshit rhetoric then that’s on you but don’t act like “heterophobia” is not justified or on par with homophobia and transphobia

and, heterophobic queers, can we also stop acting like all cishet people experience straight privilege in the same way and ignoring that straight privilege is complicated by race???

I don’t want publishers to have their cake and eat it too: slyly de-queer the book to appeal to cis/straight audiences and assume LGBTQ folks will figure it out and buy the book too. hi! i was just wondering if you could explain what it means to be queer? i'm trying to come to terms w/my sexuality and i feel like queer might be the first 'label' that i comfortably identify with but i'm just not entirely clear on what it means to be queer? there are so many different definitions..

Oh wow! This is such a difficult question to ask because, you’re right, there are so many different definitions and it means something different for everyone.

First, there is a difference (to me) between descriptively queer and politically queer. Descriptively queer would encompass anyone with a non-cishet identity. But a lot of those people have politics that don’t fall under a political queer identity.

My own political queer identity encompasses a lot of things. Primarily an acknowledgement of systemic oppressions like white supremacy, sexism, cissexism, ableism, heterosexism, sizeism, capitalism, colonization, et al., and a desire to deconstruct and destroy those things. It’s also an acknowledgment of the colonial origins of the binarist sexuality constructions that are popularized in a U.S. context (and increasingly so worldwide—thanks, imperialism!) and that those don’t fit me, particularly as a colonized (aren’t we all?) person of color in the borderlands. It’s an acknowledgment that even queer is a colonized identity. It’s an acknowledgment that my attraction is fluid and more complicated than the bodies of cis men. It means the assimilationist desires of Gay Inc that rule the gay rights movement in this country is not a means of liberation for me and I think they’re bullshit anyway. It means solidarity with those who hold marginalized identities that I do not share. And a lot more that I’m probably forgetting right now. Even my queer identity is complicated and fluid and contextual and always changing.

But it could totally mean different things for you, or anyone. It could mean you’re non-binary and so identities that rest on your own binary identity don’t fit. It could mean you’re bi/pan/fluid and just prefer the term queer. It could mean you’re not straight and you wanna smash the state. Or all of these things! It’s totally up to you.

I hope this is helpful for you! And I also invite anyone to add to this or call me out if they feel I got anything wrong.
